If we check what is going on in our mind, most of the time we are not cultivating positive habits and instead we find our mind is up and down – all over the place.Unsurprisingly we therefore find it difficult to maintain a peaceful and joyful mind.

Buddha taught that this is because of ‘delusions’ in our mind, which are distorted ways of looking at oneself, other people, and the world around us. Like a distorted mirror our delusions reflect a distorted world. Delusions are just bad mental habits and just like all bad habits they can be broken.

‘Delusions are distorted conceptual thoughts that arise within the mind, like waves on the ocean – just as it is possible for waves to die down without the ocean disappearing,so it is possible for our delusions to end without our mental continuum ceasing’

Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche How to Transform Your Life

Rather than feeling overwhelmed however, there is a cause for hope: we should understand that although delusions are deeply ingrained, they are not an intrinsic part of the mind and so they can definitely be removed. How wonderful!
Recognizing that our faults are really the faults of our delusions and not of ourself prevents us from identifying with our faults and thus feeling guilty and inadequate.

By creating new, positive habits found in Buddha’s teaching we can remove delusions from our mind and finally enjoy real peace of mind and freedom
